Cat Adoption Process

DAWS has an adoption process designed to match up the animals in our care with the most appropriate home. As a non-profit, private agency, DAWS's staff and volunteers invest a lot of time, money and love in every animal. We take our responsibility to the animals very seriously and endeavor to find them safe, loving homes where they will be cared for for life.

Generally, here is the process for adopting a cat from DAWS:

Step 1: Do some research and planning before making the decision to add a pet to your home.

Is now a good time for your family to add a cat to your home? Take this quiz to help assess your readiness to adopt. Think about what age, size and temperament of cat would best suit your lifestyle. Decide if you are ready to take on the daily responsibilities and financial obligations of pet ownership. If you decide you are ready to adopt a pet...

Step 2: Check out our companion animals online and come visit our shelter.

We have adoption hours Monday - Friday from 6pm-8pm and Weekends from 2pm-4pm. You can also set up a private appointment to see a specific cat or cats. We are located at 147 Grassy Plain St. (Rt. 53), Bethel, about 5 minutes from Bethel Center.

Step 3: Fill out an adoption application and speak to an adoption counselor.

If you find a pet you are interested in adopting, you will be asked to fill out an adoption application. An adoption counselor will review your application to make sure this particular cat would be a good match for you and your family. Please note that we may take up to three applications on a cat while we are getting them ready for adoption, and will select the home that we feel is the best match for that particular animal. Cats do not go home the same day applications are submitted. We will process your application, which involves calling a veterinary reference (if applicable) and personal reference. We will also need either permission from your landlord to have a cat, or proof of home ownership (a mortgage statement or water/sewer bill). If everything looks okay...

Step 4: Finalize the adoption. Our adoption fee for kittens is $125 and $75 for adult cats. These fees include vaccinations, the cat's spay/neuter and a veterinary exam. You will be asked to sign an adoption contract, agreeing to comply with certain standards of care for the cat. If for whatever reason you encounter problems with your new pet that cannot be solved after consultation with our behaviorists, you are required to return the cat to DAWS and not transfer ownership to a third-party. Our shelter is located at Paws-a-While Kennel, 147 Grassy Plain St. (Rte. 53), Bethel.
