MONA
While visiting relatives in Arkansas, I began caring for a stray hound-pit bull mix. She had been hanging around my in-laws' home for a day or two before we arrived, on 6/30/07. My son and I removed well over one hundred ticks, and gave her a bath. One eye was nearly swollen closed, and a claw was broken and bleeding. She had several scars on her head and shoulders. She seemed to be either in heat or pregnant. We named her Mona because she would wiggle and moan with delight at even the slightest acknowledgment of her presence!
We could not leave her in Arkansas, so we put her in the van. 1,700 miles and two Super 8’s later, she is living quite happily with us, but we cannot keep her permanently. Mona LOVES people – she seems to get along well with children as well as adults. She also seems to get along well with dogs, but NOT CATS. We have two… Though we are extremely vigilant about keeping them separated, I would be devastated if she injured one of them.
The vet thinks Mona is 2 or 3 years old. She has now received all vaccinations, and has been spayed. She is now on Interceptor and Frontline Top Spot, and is supremely “huggable!” (“She cleaned up real good!!”) She is happiest sleeping on a bed with some human pack-member, and loves to snuggle. However, just because it’s a good skill for her to have, we have introduced her to a crate as well, and she’s doing very well. She will sleep all night in a crate in my son’s room without complaining.
She seems very smart! She easily learned to “sit,” “stay” (briefly…), “leave it,” and to walk on a leash without pulling – she’s happiest on a retractable leash sshe has some room to wander a bit. Mona is houtrained. She doesn’t even pee or poop on the deck. When taken out in the morning and before bed, she pees and poops quite readily. She has had a couple of accidents in the house, but I know it was my fault, as each time, I had not taken her out for quite a while, and had failed to pick up on signs of restlessness… She consistently holds it all night, however.
She rarely barks, even at pizza delivery guys. Though she has a voracious appetite, Mona has great manners when her people are eating, and when puppy treats are being handed out. Overall, she’s a very “low maintenance” dog, happy to lounge about in true hound tradition!
MONA IS A GREAT DOG! If you have some room in your life for this lucky Southern Belle, please be in touch!
