Bindi
& Brumby (formerly Chocolate & Aslan)
We
adopted this bonded pair of kittens on December 2nd, 2007. The DAWS
foster family had said they were inseparable, and boy, did we find
that to be true. They eat, play and sleep together, and will cry if
one is out of sight for any period of time. Fortunately, they have
become just as attached to us!
Bindi
(formerly Chocolate) is a petite little girl who is almost entirely
black, with just a few white hairs sprouting up here and there.
Brumby (formerly Aslan) is going to be as big as a horse (hence his
new Australian name, which means wild horse) based on how
big he is already. Unfortunately, Brumby is so big that he and his
sister dont fit together on our window perch... time to get out
the lumber and build a bigger one. We already have to shop in the dog
section for beds!
These
kitties are so happy and affectionate. Brumby demands to be picked
up and rolls around in our arms for a love fest, while
Bindi enjoys surprising you for a cuddle while you sit in the
bathroom! Bindi is an intrepid explorer, and was always the first one
into a new area of the house when she was first brought home. She has
been fetching her mini-mice since day one, without any training
needed (well, maybe shes training us). Shell place them
strategically throughout the house, so there is always one close by
for a game. No matter what new excitement Bindi finds, Brumby is sure
to follow. They make us smile and laugh every day with their antics.
We thank DAWS for bringing us all together.

Dozer
and Lacy
Dozer
(larger male) and Lacy (smaller female) were both rescued through
DAWS. Aside from chasing squirrels and swimming at our nearly lake,
they enjoy long naps especially after their meals. As responsible
hound mix citizens they howl at anything that walks by our house but
have never bit anyone even aggressive dogs we have encountered during
our walks.
They
faced neglect, abuse and illness before making it to DAWS
and adoption, especially Dozer. I have vowed to make their little
lives the happiest possible now that they found a mommy. They have,
in return, helped me through a very painful life event
recently and kept me smiling despite my sorrow.
Sometimes
I think they were sent my way so THEY could rescue ME instead

Vicky
Vicky
has been with our family for one month and we are thrilled with her!
She is patient and loving, and never shows aggression to anyone. She
was not initially familiar with cats, but our cat has trained her
well and Vicky respects him. Vicky loves walks and visits to the dog
park. She is starting basic dog training and is learning quickly.
A
little history on Vicky: She is a Bluetick Coonhound/Australian
Shepherd mix. She and six other littermates were born in West
Virginia on Sept 2, 2006. The seven puppies were released by their
owner to Clay County Humane Association in Clay, West Virginia on
Dec. 20, 2006. The workers at CCHA named the girl pups Vixen, Holly
and Angel. The boys were named Garland, Rudolph, Comet and Donner.
Rudolph and Donner were adopted at some point before their first
birthday. Vixen arrived at DAWS in mid-Aug, 2007. DAWS renamed her
Vicky. We adopted her on Sept. 6, 2007.
On
October 6, 2007, Holly was sent to DAWS. We brought Vicky back to
DAWS for a sisterly reunion. Vicky and Holly remembered each other,
and we discovered that our mild-mannered Vicky is a bossy big sister.
We hope that Holly finds her human family soon. She is very sweet and
seems a little shy.
Here
are some photos of Vicky alone resting at home, and Vicky on her
visit to DAWS to see her sister. Holly is in the foreground of the
photo. They look so much alike!
We
commend the DAWS volunteers for the wonderful job that they do. It
is obvious how much they care about the animals. Vicky was with them
only briefly, but she was happy at DAWS. She was one lucky dog to
make it to DAWS! Thank you for making Vicky a part of our family.

Callie
Hi! Just
wanted to update you on our puppy Callie (formerly Betsy). We
adopted her in June and she has become a true member of the
family. She is very energetic and loves to play all the
time. She loves people so much that you cant sit down around
her without her climbing into your lap. She started off very
shy when we got her but now she is anything but, happy to greet
anyone who comes over. She pretends to be a guard dog, but is a
little too small to be intimidating! She is a great addition to
our home, thanks for all your help!

Maggie (Formerly
Becca)
Hello,
my old pals at DAWS! I've been in my new home since January 2007 and
I love it. My mom works from home, so I get to hang out in her
office, nap, and get my belly scratched while she works. We also like
to take
walks
together. When she asks, "Do you want to go for a walk?" I
run around in circles, I'm so happy.
When
dad and the boy come home, it's playtime! We like to wrestle on the
floor, play a game of tug-of-war, catch, or fetch. Sometimes, we all
go to the dog park, and that's really exciting! I've met a lot of
very interesting dogs there. One time, we went to a REALLY big dog
park far away, and I had a chance to swim. It was great! I can't wait
to go back.
Since
January, I've learned so much. I can roll over, lay down, shake
hands, and I know to go to my bed when I'm asked. I also have some
great toys here, like my Kong, baseballs, frisbee, and chew toys. Oh,
and you should see the great rawhide bones I get! The only thing I
don't really like it taking a bath, but at least I get some good
treats when it's over.
My
family tells me I'm goofy, and I'm not sure what that means. They
also tell me I'm a good girl and they're so glad they adopted me.
Life is good!
Love,
Maggie
York
& Celeste
We
want to tell you a happy ending story of two shy cats. When we met
York (top photo) and Celeste (bottom photo) they were both stressed.
When York came to DAWS we were told he was eager to make friends, but
unfortunately ran into a couple of "bullies" and retreated
to the safety of his cage. Celeste had been at the shelter for a
year, and while she had been beautifully cared for, she was a shy
girl and spent most of the day sitting by herself. We visited DAWS
several times, looking for our forever cats. We're so glad we did
that because these special cats needed someone to look beyond first
impressions to know how great they could be. As we spent time with
them it was clear they were very friendly, gentle cats, longing for
attention and a place of their own.
We're
so happy to tell you that they are now full members of our family.
It's been so fun to see them flourish in our home, like flowers
unfolding one petal at a time. They've become good friends who play
and sleep together, and really enjoy each other's company. York is
playful, leaps full flights of stairs in three bounds, and loves to
sit in the window watching birds. Celeste turns out to be a social
gal who loves company and will lead total strangers up to her room so
she can get a brushing. Who knew?
We're
so glad that we took the time to find our two gems. Thank you, DAWS,
for saving them for us.

Squeaky
We
adopted Squeaky in June of 2007 and he has become a very important
part of our family. Squeaky has made himself at home in our house and
has three new best friends in my dogs.
Squeaky
would like to send a very special thank you to everyone at DAWS.

Brady
(formerly Sol)
I
just wanted to let you know how well Brady (formerly Sol) is doing
in our home. He is an extremely sweet cat with a great personality.
As he was an outdoor cat when rescued, he lives in the garage and in
the breezeway (or should I say "rules" those areas!). He
loves attention and being held; he loves someone to pat him. He
follows me around the yard when I am doing yard work, and comes
running when he sees me. Brady's only problem is that he is getting
quite chubby from all the spoiling and needs to go on a diet. I just
want to thank you for this opportunity to adopt such a wonderful cat!
I hope you like the picture...this used to be MY chair.

Sherman
I
wanted to give you an update on how dear old Sherman has been doing.
It is approaching the two year anniversary of when I adopted Sherman
from your facility. I absolutely love this animal and he has fit into
my live fantastically. We have been living up in Boston for the past
year and are getting along great. Sherman spends his days perched on
the window sill spying on nearby birds, sleeping on my bedroom
pillows, and glued to my lap when I am sitting around the apartment.
He is one of the most beautiful, affectionate, and loving cats I have
ever come across.
Everyone
who meets him falls in love with him instantly and asks where I got
him. DAWS always makes its way into conversation and how thankful I
am that you brought this cat into my life. This cat never leaves my
side and he is just amazing. I would just like to thank all of the
volunteers that make it possible to bring such animals into peoples
lives. Thank you so very much!
Sincerely,
Laura

Billy
& Bailey
Hi
Folks,
Just
a quick note and a few photos of Bailey and Billy relaxing (what
they do best), to share with you for the Happy Endings
page. Weve been together over a year, for Bailey, and almost a
year with Billy, and we couldnt be happier. My devastatingly
handsome orange Bookend Boys spend most days being
extensively pampered, lots of toys, treats, soothing music, bird
watching and love. They are doing great and I cant imagine a
time when they werent part of my life. Billy is in the top
photo and Bailey is in the bottom photo. Thank you DAWS, we will be
sure to continue to sponsor as many other DAWS kitties as we can,
until they find a forever home too.

Benny
(formerly Sato Winn Dixie)
I
adopted Benny (formerly Sato Winn Dixie) in early July 2007.
He
is the SWEETEST dog who loves everyone he meets. We walk down my
street in Harlem, NY and are
greeted by many people who know his name. He has learned seven
commands already and loves his new sister, my cat Sadie. He is so
goofy and always has me laughing.
Benny
has been a wonderful addition to my life and I can't thank you
enough for him!
Love,
Sarah and Benny

Goldie
Goldie
is doing great, and is loved by me and the whole neighborhood. We
bonded
very quickly, as she insisted on putting her head on my shoulder for
the entire ride home.
She
has made many friends, both two and four legged. And she even won
over my cat by licking her face.
Within
a few days she was completely at home, and has become a great
watchdog.
Despite her sweet, Golden retriever personality, her Dobie
protectiveness
and chesty bark comes out when she hears strange
noises.
All my neighbors adore her. They leave her presents, and even
send
her emails.
She
sends her best to everyone at DAWS.

Quincy
Hello,
We
adopted our wonderful dog from DAWS on Feb 27th, 2007. At the
shelter, his name was "Max", but we re-named him Quincy
after we brought the sweet pup home. He's completed basic obedience
training, working with us and a professional trainer. He's obedient,
safe and quite smart.
Quincy's
temperament is incredible, and everyone he meets comments on it.
Quincy is gentle and patient with our 2 year old son, and has
appointed himself his primary bodyguard and playmate. He's even been
accepted by the family cat! Quincy is a true "love-bug",
with not a mean bone in his body. He spends his days playing at home,
going for car rides, napping and watching movies with the family.
We
love Quincy, and wanted to let you know how he's doing with his
"forever family". Here's a few photos so you can see for yourself.
Thanks
Again!

Sadie
Hi
My name is Sadie (my name was Donna at DAWS). I was adopted into my
forever home on May 22, 2004. I just wanted to give everyone an
update on my progress. I go to the dog park everyday and meet all my
friends there and we have a ball running and sniffing each other
(well, that's what dogs do).
My
forever home is the best and I gets lots of love and attention. I am
a good girl too. But it was hard at first. You see, I was born in
Puerto Rico where the dogs run wild and while there are people that
try to help, there are still so many dogs that don't have forever
homes. I was one of the lucky ones in that I was rescued and brought
to the US-but it was scary-I am just a little dog you know and I was
only a baby when I came to DAWS. A nice lady fostered me for a while
but she wasn't able to keep me so back to the shelter I went. Then
one day a man and a woman came looking for a new pet and while they
think they chose me, I really chose them. I've been a happy dog ever since.
I
want to thank all the people at DAWS for giving me a chance and hope
all the animals find their forever homes. Love, Sadie

Mickey
& Zeke
Eight
months ago I brought Mickey and Zeke home from DAWS. It has felt so
much more like home ever since. Every day I find the cats waiting for
me at the door when I get home from work, vying for my attention. The
rest of the night, they continue soliciting attention. Mickey
randomly runs up to me and meows "hi" while quivering his
tail with excitement. He asks for lots of belly rubs and LOVES to sit
on the couch and watch TV with me.
It
took awhile for me to realize that Zeke wants to appear independent,
but is secretly a total Momma's boy (shhhh... when he suspects I've
figured it out, he turns on the cattitude)! He always has to be in
the same room as me. Sometimes he observes from across the room,
other times he insists on sitting on top of me while purring loudly
(or sitting on my keyboard while I try to type - that's his
favorite). He sleeps next to me (or on top of me) all night long. As
I write this, Zeke is in a flirty mood, laying belly up and meowing
for attention.
Thank
you so much for the wonderful, loving care Mickey and Zeke received
at DAWS. It upsets me to think these guys were at a shelter for so
long. Then I think about DAWS and the love they received from the
volunteers and realize how lucky they are.
