Volunteer Spotlight: Alex Kurkjy
Alex Kurkjy started his volunteer journey at DAWS in 2006 as a cat socializer. Over the next 16 years, he has held many different positions within our organization including Team Lead, and Cat Program Chair. He also acted as the Clinic Co-Chair, where he coordinated the medical care for all shelter and foster cats/kittens, and supervised weekend spay/neuter clinics with visiting veterinarians.
In 2014, Alex started driving to meet animal transports that originated from shelters in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Ohio and bringing them back to DAWS. He has driven close to 2,000 dogs and cats over eight years, ranging anywhere from 40 to 600 miles round trip to meet each transport. Gina Amenta, Director of Operations, says, “His devotion and compassion to our shelter is unparalleled and thanks to Alex, he has helped save countless lives. He is always willing to do whatever needs to be done for our four-legged friends. We are truly blessed to have him as a member of the DAWS family.”
