This adorable boy is Jacko. He is 6-month-olds and weighs 20 lb. We think he has some dachshund in his breed mix. Jacko is a bit more shy compared to his sisters, but he makes up for it with his gentle and loving personality. This sweet boy benefits from gentle encouragement through the form of petting to help him to understand that things are not so scary. Once Jacko warms up, he wants nothing more than to climb into your lap and give you kisses. Jacko does like to mark in multiple areas which should improve with training and a belly band. He will do great with dog-savvy children who are able to respect his space and comfort when needed, and he would love to have a confident dog friend to play with. This adorable girl is Lena. She is one-year-old and weighs 37 lb. We think she has some bulldog or pug in her. Whatever the breed mix, she is 100% cute! Lena is a high energy and enthusiastic young dog. Her ideal home is with somebody who has dog experience and is OK with training, whether it's with previous knowledge or hiring a trainer. Lena just needs an opportunity to learn basic obedience. Lena is a very friendly pup. She is excited to greet any stranger and gets so excited that she will jump up on them repeatedly, which is something we are working on with her. She loves to play with toys and even just run around with them in her mouth. Lena is incredibly smart and motivated and is bound to learn quickly. All Lena wants is cuddles and playtime. This adorable little girl is Karla. She is a one-year-old chihuahua mix and weighs just 14.6 lb. Her foster says "Karla is a sweet puppy who loves to play with toys and snuggle with her people. She still has some puppy energy but is also able to settle rather easily. Karla is still working on housetraining and puppy etiquette (such as not to take shoes) so she will need an adopter willing to continue her training. Luckily, Karla is smart, eager to please and food motivated. Speaking of food, she eats very well. And she sleeps through the night, walks well on a leash, does well in a crate and quietly sits in a car for trips. This pretty kitty is Fluff. She is a one-year-old long-haired tortoiseshell cat. Fluff was born to a feral mom and came to foster care when she was about 3 months old. Fluff went through a big adjustment period with trusting humans in the beginning of her stay with her foster family. She has a spirited personality. Fluff is a typical tortoiseshell with the “tortitude” personality. She is very playful, but willfully independent. The foster family does pick her up, but it has to be on her terms. Fluff gets along great with other cats, but has not had the experience of socializing with dogs. He is very much a people dog and greets everyone with a wagging tail. Some things to know about Nash are that he's best kept on a leash due to his love of running and he will sometimes bark at cars as they go by. Nash gets excited when seeing dogs on leash and will bark at them as well, but stops the second they are out of sight. Nash has medium-low energy and is very snuggly and loves attention and pets. Nash would do great in a home with children of all ages. He might have trouble adjusting to a home with another dog due to his previous living situation (the other dog didn't like Nash), but a dog introduction can be done. This handsome boy is Bandit. He is 4-years-old and weighs 60 lb. We think he is a foxhound mix. Bandit is a very sweet dog who loves any kind of attention. His goofy ears are sure to catch anybody's attention. Bandit loves to put his paws up on your lap so that he can give your face kisses. He's a big dog that does not quite know his size but he's food motivated and ready to learn. Bandit is a people's dog and immediately loves anybody he meets. He would like to be in a home where he isn't alone for long hours. Although Bandit is an active boy who does like to play, he's just happy to be doing anything as long as it's with people. He gets along well with other dogs but does appear to seek out people's attention more. Bandit might be best in an adult-only home due to his size, lack of body awareness and the fact that he can be grabby when taking treats. Dog savvy teens could possibly be a good fit as well. He would do best with a physically capable handler, who can work with him so he can learn to not pull on the leash when he walks. An Easy Walk or front lead harness would help this issue. This adorable pup is Jasper and he is our Dog of the Month for October! If you adopt Jasper this month, the adoption fee will be 25 % reduced! Jasper is 10-months-old and with his scruffy muzzle, must have some terrier in him. Jasper currently weighs 32 lb so we expect he will be about 40 lb full grown. Jasper is a very happy, friendly, playful pup. He loves attention and enjoys being active outside. Jasper knows how to sit when given a hand signal and is food/treat motivated and can learn easily. When interacting with him, Jasper is very wiggly, sweet and gives kisses. Jasper would make an amazing family dog and would do great with children of all ages. He would love to have a dog friend to play with. We can "cat-test" him if needed but he might have too much energy unless it is a dog-savvy cat. Bubbles was a local owner surrender and went from living outside in a yard to now living at a loving and supportive foster home. His foster says "Bubbles is a different dog than when I first got him. He has adapted very well to living indoors. Bubbles is extremely affectionate but he needs a little time and patience when meeting new people. Bubbles is playful, loyal and listens well when called by name. He is sometimes clumsy on his long legs. He gets along well with other dogs. Bubbles needs some leash training and can get mouthy when excited, but he is easy to redirect. Bubbles is fully housetrained." Zorro is our longest resident at DAWS and has been here for four years. During that time, this 70 lb. six-year-old shepherd mix has been working very hard on training and we believe his time has come to find his furever home! Back in 2019, when Zorro first arrived to DAWS after being saved from a high kill shelter in Kentucky, he began developing some behavioral challenges, making it difficult to find him the right home. Through extensive training, Zorro has proved himself to be a pup that can develop solid friendships with humans, and even befriend select dogs. Zorro has been trained using treats and he eagerly sits, lies down and gives a paw on command. He’s done very well with car rides. He has enjoyed many hikes, walks, and play-time with his volunteer team. Time and time again, he has shown what a good boy he is, he just needs to find that special person! With a dog like Zorro, he will need a very specific adopter... Zorro Owner Requirements: • Experienced dog owner • Adult-only home with no kids or future children • Must be the only pet in the home • Has to have an understanding of positive reinforcement training • House with a fenced yard of at least 6 ft. • Willing to slowly introduce Zorro to people close to the family and educate them on Zorro’s do’s & don'ts • Come and meet Zorro multiple times If you think you can be the hero that Zorro needs, please complete our online application.
