This pretty girl is Sunny. She is a 2-year-old terrier mix and weighs just 21 lb. Sunny's foster says "Sunny is a such a great example of why our family fosters dogs. She is a sensitive, gentle, sweet little lady who probably wouldn't show her true personality in the hustle and bustle of shelter life. She was quiet and shy when we first got her home, but with a quiet spot and a bed of her own, she quickly started to relax and gave us her trust. To watch that transformation makes fostering so rewarding! Sunny is a quiet, happy, playful little love and enjoys time with us, our dogs and her toys. She walks well on a leash and is housetrained. Sunny is a big fan of car rides, hiking with our dogs and does not mind quiet time at home when we go out. There is a little prance when she walks and her tail wag makes her whole body shake! Sunny is smart and looks to please, she does well with positive reinforcement, praise and treats. Sunny would probably do best in a home that is on the calmer side where she can take some time to get familiar and comfortable without too much chaos. This adorable boy is Toro. He is 2-years-old and weighs 30 lb. He has the body of a beagle and the coloring of a yellow lab! Toro came to us all the way from Georgia to find a loving home. Toro is timid and slow to warm up but once he trusts you, all he wants is love. He walks well on a leash and does not seem to mind any environmental stressors. We think once out of the kennel environment, he will really open up. Toro would do best with an experienced owner who can understand and read his body language, so as not to push him. He should not be rushed for social interactions, but he is well worth the wait. He would do well with older, dog savvy children (10 years and up) who can be mindful of his timidness. Toro really comes out of his shell around confident, playful dogs and they seem to help boost his social skills. Ideally, he would love to have a dog buddy in the home. This sweet girl is Pax. She is 6-years-old and weighs 69 lb. We think she is a lab mix. Whatever her breed, she is 100 % wonderful! Pax's foster says "Pax is a people lover to say the least. She is polite to everyone she meets--she always sits and offers her paw to say hello and patiently waits for pets. She wants to be by her person at all times and loves to lounge, but she does enjoy a nice walk outside and will play if initiated. Pax is gentle with cats and dogs, but likes having a space to call her own like a personal dog bed. If she needs a moment away from my dog, she hops on the ottoman and recharges. Pax is housetrained, crate trained and does very well in the car. Pax will be a wonderful addition to any family. She will give you endless amounts of love and truly be your best pal." This handsome boy is Oreo and he is our Dog of the Month for September! If you adopt Oreo this month, the adoption fee is 25 % reduced! Oreo is two-years-old and weighs 32 lb. With his adorable speckled coat, we think he is a blue heeler mix. Whatever his breed mix, he is 100% adorable! Oreo is a very friendly dog, fine with people and other dogs. Oreo walks nicely on a leash and would love to go on all kinds of outside adventures. Oreo shows no signs of resource guarding and enjoys pets and attention. A home with kids 10 and up would be best. Zorro is our longest resident at DAWS and has been here for four years. During that time, this 70 lb. six-year-old shepherd mix has been working very hard on training and we believe his time has come to find his furever home! Back in 2019, when Zorro first arrived to DAWS after being saved from a high kill shelter in Kentucky, he began developing some behavioral challenges, making it difficult to find him the right home. Through extensive training, Zorro has proved himself to be a pup that can develop solid friendships with humans, and even befriend select dogs. Zorro has been trained using treats and he eagerly sits, lies down and gives a paw on command. He’s done very well with car rides. He has enjoyed many hikes, walks, and play-time with his volunteer team. Time and time again, he has shown what a good boy he is, he just needs to find that special person! With a dog like Zorro, he will need a very specific adopter... Zorro Owner Requirements: • Experienced dog owner • Adult-only home with no kids or future children • Must be the only pet in the home • Has to have an understanding of positive reinforcement training • House with a fenced yard of at least 6 ft. • Willing to slowly introduce Zorro to people close to the family and educate them on Zorro’s do’s & don'ts • Come and meet Zorro multiple times If you think you can be the hero that Zorro needs, please complete our online application.
